(5) Dangers of working on roofs and in ceilings.
1. Drilling into electrical cabling. When drilling into a roof from above, there's a chance you might drill straight into an electrical cable that's been pinned to the stud; Although this is not following the electrical installation code, not all electrical work was done by professionals or at a time when the code was relevant.
2. Falling off your ladder. Getting on and off your ladder at the top is the riskiest time for an antenna installer. This is where nearly all roof falling accidents happen; You have to be extremely careful, particularly on multi-storey homes, which there is a lot of in Miami and Nobby Beach.
3. Falling off or through the roof. It seems like a no-brainer; however, some roofs have fake tiles which you can accidently step back onto while you're concentrating on something else. Likewise, you could take a step backward into thin air the same way.
4. Breaking a beam. When you're inside a roof cavity doing your TV antenna work, you're relying on the wooden beams to be solid, but this is a mistake. You should always be hanging on with your other limbs when putting weight on a beam. You won't be able to tell if it's got a problem until it's too late
5. Spiking yourself on a nail. Unfortunately, roof cavities aren't built with safety in mind. There's always plenty of nails and other sharp things poking out of wood ready to scalp you. You have to really be careful. We even come across the occasional unfinished live electrical wire hazard.
A real-life example from today, 28th May 2019 follows:
"Marvin moved into his new home in Miami Gold Coast and tried to replace his old TV antenna system himself, however he quickly realised he was out of his depth and called in Tv Magic. When we arrived, we found Marvin's home to very old. It had asbestos roofing and walls. To install the new digital antenna system, we had to attached the new pole to side of the roof apex, screwing into the wood with a J-Bar mount. We then ran cabling down the outside of his home in conduit and under the house to the various TV locations, thus avoiding the asbestos."
"Reilly's huge TV antenna pole came crashing down yesterday at her Nobby Beach home. When we arrived, we inspected the situation and explained to Reilly that we couldn't stand the old pole back up and again, it was too rusted and the TV antenna was broken. So, we had to install a new 15ft mast and digital antenna on her home. Thankfully Reilly was able to claim the expense on her insurance with the help of our damage report."
