(5) Common mistakes we see done by DIYers and electricians doing TV antenna and Foxtel work

1. Saddle and Screw fittings. When you go to a wholesaler or Bunnings for TV and Foxtel installation fittings, they tend to have various types of the same product with some being really bad for digital TV signal, which is any saddle and screw fittings. The advantage is you don't need the specialised tools a professional installer like TV Magic has to fit off cables and wall plates with the digital standard fittings. The saddle and screw fittings were fine for analogue TV, but are quite problematic for digital TV signal.

2. Snap in wall plate fittings. If I had a dollar for every time I've seen a broken wall plate fitting from these very commonly used wall plates by electricians, I honestly don't know how they keep fitting them knowing their poor design; I've got a feeling it's because the customers must think it's their fault for pushing the cable in too hard or something, otherwise the electricians would be sick of getting call backs real fast. Basically, you can usually fairly easily push the wall plate connection through and into the wall cavity on these. Our TV Magic technicians never supply these types of wall plates when installing new TV points or Foxtel connections.

3. Faulty cable terminations. Often a non-industry expert will fit off the cable terminations incorrectly and cause signal loss which most of them can't even test for as they usually don't have the correct equipment. Time and time again, our TV technicians are fixing electricians and DIYers cable terminations, ultimately costing the customer twice.

4. No Signal Testing Equipment. The cost of the industry specific equipment to measure TV antenna and Foxtel signal is very expensive and only companies like ours have them for this reason. Amateurs frequently attempt installing new TV outlets or Foxtel sockets for our Mermaid Waters customers but have no idea if it's even working correctly, and they usually aren't as that's why they are our customers now ;)

5. No idea how to split a cable properly. I find it almost comical some of the ways we come across amateurs attempts at splitting a cable in the roof, it often involves tape and twisting wires together in hope of it working. The reality is, it will work to some extent, but at about 20% capacity, and sometimes they think there's nothing wrong because their TV channels still come through most of the time ;) as if to say, near enough is good enough. Any who, I'd suggest calling an industry professional as you might imagine.

"Tom lives in a semi-permanent home at a caravan park in Mermaid Beach Gold Coast and he wanted to run a second TV outlet from his antenna to his outdoor sitting area. When we arrived, we figured out the best way to do this for his in this instance, was to run the new TV point cable down the back of the caravan and underneath it to his outdoor TV cabinet.
