5 Things to watch out for when buying a seemingly "cheaper" TV.
- The build quality. We find a lot of the cheap TVs are made of really cheap plastic compared to the more quality products. When you touch the plastic casing it's easily squished and feels like you could break it really easily. Picking up a cheap TV can even make the whole thing flex.
- Poor viewing angles. A cheap display panel will look fine when viewed from straight ahead but if you're trying to look at the screen from an angled it can look terrible.
- Slow to operate. Cheap TV's generally have slow computers inside to save on build cost. This means your TV may take a long time to start up and turn off. It may be frustrating changing channels slowing and likewise responding to your remote.
- Remote control is annoying. Cheaper TV's come with slow to respond remote controls and you typically have to point them exactly at a particular corner of the TV for them to even work. It's normally very frustrating to use these.
- Harder to mount on a wall. To save on costs, these TV's typically have a fixed power cable that can't detach from the back of the TV making it that much harder to successfully wall mount it with hidden cables. We've setup heaps of TV's in Mudgeeraba and I stand by advice which is don't buy a cheap TV and expect a pleasant user experience.
A real-life example from today, 19th March 2019 follows:
"Amanda in Mudgeeraba bought a new 75inch TV and needed help setting it up and installing it on her wall. Once we wall mounted her TV we tuned in the channels, signed into her Netflix (making sure it worked) and tested out her new DVD / Blue Ray player. Everything worked great first up and then the TV channels started to pixelate. We got out our TV reception signal meter and work her antenna signal was really weak. We investigated and found out her aerial booster amplifier wasn't working. Luckily for Amanda not only are we TV technicians we're also antenna technicians as well and quickly resolved the matter before finishing up."
"Barbara brought a new sound-bar and couldn't get her TV to send sound to it, it was driving her nuts! So she called us after a few hours of her and her husband trying to get it to work. She was very thankful when we arrived I can tell you that. After we looked at the situation we found they had setup their TV and sound bar correctly with the cables but the TV itself require a few settings changed to make it work. LG and Sony TV's have a habit of doing this. We managed to get their sound-bar working well with the TV as intended, whereby her TV remote controls the sound-bar as well."
