5 Things to watch out for when buying a seemingly "cheap" Home Cinema Package.

  1. Is the projector actually full HD? There's a lot of marketing hype around the "HD, high definition" I've found in my experience that some cheap home cinema projectors don't actually transmit full HD despite what they say on the box. It will only be transmitted something like 720p instead of 1080p. A quick rule of thumb is that most decent projectors start from $2000 and go up from there, try not to spend less or you could be buying a lemon.
  2. Does it come with a 10m HDMI cable? Nearly all home cinemas we install in Mudgeeraba Gold Coast require a 10m Full HD cable, in fact I'd recommend a 4k cable nowadays with the way technology is progressing. You can buy cheap 10m HDMI cables but honestly they are usually rubbish and are typically hard to replace if you have an issue down the track. Expect to pay at least over $100 for one of these cables. Some installs, like where when the house is built you can't run a new cable I'd definitely suggest running a spare, just in case.
  3. Thin speaker wire. Many cheaper speaker kits and some quality ones will come with free speaker wire to connect your surround sound speakers with. Most of the time the free cable is way too thin, you're going to need a thicker gauge speaker cable, preferable oxygen free too. I'd recommend using at least 14-guage speaker wire to avoid any performance issues.
  4. Hard to use or impractical projector mounting brackets. Ever wondered why you're having such a hard time installing your projector safely and aligning it? Without seeing it, but knowing from experience, it's because you've got a badly designed projector bracket, which is about 90% of the market. I don't know why they don't field test their own equipment honestly, even the high end manufactures produce a lot of projector brackets I'd never use.

A real-life example from today, 20th March 2019 follows:

"Jude moved into a new home in Mudgeeraba Gold Coast which previously had a home cinema installed and now he's been left with a bunch of speaker wires hanging out of the walls where the surround sound speakers used to be and a spaghetti of wires coming out of the wall where the AV receiver etc. was located. This is actually quite common we find. New owners don't know what to do, they don't know what equipment they need to get their media room setup as a home cinema again. We can assist you with a professional consultation to work out what's missing and what's best for you and help you source the hi-fi equipment you need so we can install it for you."

"Alexander tried to install his new home theatre projector himself in Mudgeeraba Gold Coast after his existing one packed it in. Alexander quickly realised he was in over his head and called in TV Magic Mudgeeraba to help him out. When we arrived, we found that for Alexander to use his new modern projector we needed to replace the projector bracket and cabling to the AV receiver. We also suggested Alexander replaces his old speaker amplifier to get the best picture to his new HD cinema projector."

Some of my media room installations

Here, a bedroom was turned into a media room! Featuring, a projector installation with white projector and white bracket - (in bedroom) Featuring a 200" screen and wireless lifestyle sound system

This designated media room (below) features A 120" Screen with white in wall speakers - 5.1 system

This designated media / cinema room (below) features leather cinema chairs, royal red cinema carpet, royal red sound dampened walls, motorised cinema curtains, fixed frame 150" screen and a state of the art  surround sound system

I can tailor media room packages and equipment to your personal taste and/or colour scheme

A nice media room with oversized book shelf speakers, centre speaker & sub woofer flush inside designated recessed spaces

This is a typical 'home theatre setup' I do on day-to-day basis. The more, sophisticated full-spec home cinemas are more a once a week/fortnight kind of thing. (The white TV and white speakers are a new trend of 2017/18)

Here is one of my favourite home theatre installation jobs I've ever done. At the time, this was a super slim $6000 Ultra HD 60" TV that gave an absolutely stunning picture. Wall mounted on a feature wall along with some high end floor standing and centre speaker this was a home theatre system that had better quality gear than many of the designated home theatre rooms!

This is another of my favourites.. media room installed in a regular lounge room. I installed the led cup holders in a $10,000 lounge. The same centre lounge centre-console houses a power sub woofer underneath so the leather recliners rumble. The speakers are high end Bower & Wilkins, TV cabinet from King Furniture and rug from Rugs a Million lol. To top it all off this home theatre / media room was installed in a rental house ... the projector was installed just behind the lounge on the AV rack housing all the A.V gear as opposed to mounted from the ceiling. No cables are to be seen anywhere and there won't be any holes for the tennant after they move out except 2x little holes that hold the projector screen brackets :)

A designated cinema room with a simple setup. Mood downlights and a TV on the wall..

Now you might have to decide what speakers you want for your home theatre system!

And do you want a projector and screen? Or a large TV on the wall for your media room?
