5 Common things that can cause your digital antenna to perform poorly
- The antenna is misaligned. Although you don't have to be exact, having your TV antenna not facing it's optimal direction (we use a special machine to do this) you're going to be getting less signal than you should which can cause channel pixelation.
- Not terminating the coax connection properly. If you mess up the connection to your antenna on the roof (most DIYer's do this) you're going to get a severely diminished antenna signal. All it takes is one very tiny strand of insulation braiding to touch something it shouldn't and you've messed up your antenna signal and will likely be calling an expert to repair your DIY TV reception efforts.
- Not waterproof the balun connection properly. This is another common mistake DIYers, electricians etc make. If you don't water proof the balun properly over time the water wrecks the termination point and water can also seep into your coax cable causing trouble at the amplifier or splitter.
- Using the incorrect vertical / horizontal polarization. Some TV antenna transmissions like in Palm beach may require a digital antenna to be installed for vertical polarised signal reception. The currumbin hill transmitter is one of these. If you do it wrong, you'll get some signal but far from the amount you should be.
- Choosing the wrong antenna. Most suppliers of digital antennas don't do the actual installation work and honestly don't have a clue as to which antennas are better than others or suitable for each home. A real-life example from today, 27th February 2019 follows:
