When a television receives a digital signal, the “digital tuner” in the television decodes that signal and then passes it along for your television to display. Now the signal that we are receiving in this day and age is digital, so essentially made up of 1’s and 0’s. When the signal is perfect then all the 1’s are where they should be, and all the 0’s are where they should be – however what happens when they aren’t?

When there is a problem with the television signal, or part of your television antenna system is causing “resistance” to the signal it’s carrying, the 1’s and 0’s can get mixed up or lost – thus causing an error in the signal. This is when your television steps up to the plate and with the help of it’s computer processor, it will attempt to “identify and correct” these errors. Now each brand and model of television can do this with varying degrees of effectiveness, however they all have their limits!
So as soon as the signal has too many “errors” for the television tuner to cope with, then your signal will start to break up. And unfortunately, once the picture starts to break up it’s not a huge step before you lose a picture completely and receive the dreaded “No Signal” message across your screen.
This effect, where the television signal deteriorates extremely quickly and then drops out completely is called the “digital cliff”.
So, whilst you the viewer think your signal is perfect and there aren’t any problems, the truth of the matter may be that the signal is quite bad, but your television itself is fixing it for you.
