3 Potential problems with having shared antenna systems on duplexes.
- Getting repairs done. If you have a problem with the TV reception, unless you want to pay the whole bill yourself, you're going to have to try organising a split bill with your neighbour, which can lead to all sorts of issues as you can imagine.
- Powered Boosters. Many digital antenna installations in Varsity Lakes have boosters install on the mast which require power. Unfortunately that means on of the units is responsible for keeping the power on to keep the antenna working, which leads to many unfavourable situations.
- Roof cavity access. The shared antenna needs to be installed on one side or the other of the duplex, which means the main cabling is inside one of the roof cavities. If you're living in a duplex and having trouble with your TV reception, there's a 50/50 chance we'll need to get into your neighbours roof space. Which means they have to be home and accommodating. If you're good friend with your duplex neighbour there shouldn't be an issue, but we find many are not. Something to think about before buying a duplex unit.
A real-life example from today, 15th April 2019 follows:
"We completed a digital antenna installation in Varsity Lakes today at a local tavern which was having troubles after storms earlier in the year. What we found was that water was leaking into the coax cabling at the point where it attaches to the TV antenna, which after a lot of rain, would be enough to travel down inside the cable and pool at the splitter component. Not only was the splitter corroded and wrecked, so was the existing digital tv antennas balun, so it had to be replaced. After we completed the repair work, the Varsity Lakes taverns TV reception was terrific again!"
"Colin lives in a duplex in Varsity Lakes Gold Coast, when his neighbours moved out, he suddenly found himself with no TV reception. When we arrived, we found Colin's duplex was using a shared digital antenna installation system. When his neighbours moved out, they had unknowingly taken the booster for the tv antennas masthead amplifier, causing the TV antenna signal to stop working. Both Colin and I agreed instead of trying to fix this, it was better for him to have his own independent digital antenna installation just for his unit, which is what we did for him today."
