How do I know if I have a problem with my Antenna? Could it just be my TV? Or the way I've set it up? Do I need a booster?
The best answer. The only true way to know is to have a TV technician come out and check your situation. We have special tools that measure TV signal which will give us the answer.
Could it just be my TV? Occasionally we do come across TV's that have developed a faulty tuner, the TV appears to work properly with all its features but you can't watch normal Free To Air TV still. The only true way to tell is to confirm the tv signal is good with a proper tv signal meter at the cable which is being plugged into the TV. The solution to this is normally to buy another TV if your TV is out of warranty or..... to watch TV using an external tuner such as a Digital Set Top Box or recorder.
Could it be the way I've set up my TV equipment? Sometimes. It's easy to make a mistake installing TV equipment nowadays. Technology is getting more and more complicated and if you don't do this type of thing often than the chance of making mistakes is high. We find that often our customers have hooked up their TV equipment themselves successfully but not in the best way and are unknowingly missing out on watching the best picture and sound they have available.
A sure sign it's your Antenna. Not always, but often if none of your TV's are picking up Free to Air signal then there is a house wide issue with your TV Antenna system, not usually just the antenna itself.
Do I need a booster? Here's the thing, what customers call a booster is actually a power injector for a signal amplifier that lives in the roof or on the antenna mast (usually). By itself, the "booster" does nothing, it doesn't boost the signal, it merely sends some electricity into the antenna system and hopefully powers an amplifier that it's matched with. The real question is, does my antenna system require a power injector? The reality is that answer can't be answered over the phone and a technician needs to visit your home to figure out why your TV reception isn't working. A missing power injector / booster might be the solution or only half the solution, either way you're going to need an expert to solve you TV reception problem.
A real-life example from today, 2nd Oct 2017 follows:
Trevor arrange Dan and Paul from TV Magic Bundall to visit his rental property because the previous tenants had taken the "signal booster" when they moved out and that's why the new tenants couldn't watch TV; or so he thought. What we found when we accessed his Bundall properties antenna system was indeed the "signal booster" was missing but what most people don't know if the "signal booster" is actually a "power supply" for the amplifier fitted in the roof or on the aerial mast. After we replaced the missing power supply we tested the TV signal and found the amplifier wasn't even working so we hopped onto the roof to check it out. On the roof we found the "Booster" / Masthead amplifier to be rusty and full of ants' nests. After replacing the "antenna booster" / masthead amplifier and power injector plus a few minor things like the cabling connectors the TV signal worked great again. Happy tenants, happy landlord.
